Master Degree Programs

What Entails a Master’s Degree?

Master degree programs are a solution for college graduates who find the bachelor degree insufficient for the profession they would like to have. Students pursuing a masters degree program study courses that are highly focused in their field of study (their major), unlike the students in the bachelor's degree programs. Master degree programs entail classes, usually conducted as seminars, with a lot of discussion. Professors in a masters course expect a higher level of analysis from the students than from those in the bachelor program. They also involve a lot of personal study and commitment.

Courses Offered in a Masters Degree Program?

A masters degree requires two years of full time graduate school course work to complete. The most common masters degree courses are the Master of Arts (MA) and the Master of Science (MS). Whether you earn an MA or MS will depend on the school you attend than the academic requirements fulfilled. The two are similar in educational requirements, although they have different names. There are many fields to choose from in master degree programs, ranging from psychology, to biology, just as in a bachelor's degree program. However, some fields have special degrees, like MBA for business and MSW for social work.

Master Degree Requirements

Most of the master degree programs give requirements to the students to complete an extended research paper or a master's thesis. Depending on the field of specialization, the master's thesis may involve conducting a thorough analysis of either a scientific experiment or of literature. There are other master degree programs that offer alternatives to the master thesis such as written projects or comprehensive exams that are less rigorous than theses. In service oriented fields like counseling and clinical psychology and social work, the master degree programs require the students to take an internship where they learn applied skills.
